Modular housing, in the context of modern architecture, helps address the need for sustainable yet upscale housing.
Success in modular housing revolves around aligning multiple parties around a common goal, from city planning and permitting to architecture, manufacturing, site prep, and installation. Essentially, the partnership must produce more than just the sum of all parts — to make it work, the team must look beyond "what's in it for me".
That's what the partnership between a design-build firm, Ark-Shelter, and a luxury furniture designer, BeOak by Javorina, truly meant for everyone involved. Over six busy months of 2025 in a pilot joint project, architects Martin Mikovcak and Michiel De Backer from Ark-Shelter, together with Petr Rokusek from BeOak, manufactured, transported, and installed four modular houses in East Flanders, Belgium.
Thanks to the combined decades of experience in modular manufacturing with precise interior integration and custom-made furniture, the final stages of each house were quite swift. One of those homes arrived on five trucks. The crew lowered each of the five modules onto a prepared concrete foundation, connected them, and got them ready to welcome their new homeowners in just one week.
"It takes real mutual support — not testing each other's limits, but leaning in with generosity and commitment to create something none of us could build alone," comments Petr Rokusek, owner and head of R&D at BeOak.
